About Fly Fishing in the Hawkes Bay

Hawke's Bay has a great
diversity of fishing opportunities, with extensive river fishing
opportunities which provide some spectacular headwater fishing as well
as easily accessible lowland angling making it a popular destination.
Hawkes Bay has four main river systems Mohaka, Ngaruroro, Tutaekuri,
Tukituki and a number of highly rated tributary streams most of which
can be explored on day trips from the Napier city area by 4WD vehicle or
Helicopter.
In Northern Hawkes Bay we have the famous Ruakituri river, which is well known for nice Brown Trout.
The mighty Tongariro River, and the smaller Tauranga-Taupo River which
run into Lake Taupo are only a short distance across the Kaweka and
Kaimanawa ranges from Hawkes Bay.
We have excellent trout fishing all year round, but our main fishing
season is from 1st October to 30th June, - some rivers in the north
islands Central Plateau and the Ruakituri river on the East Coast open
until the end of June.
There are also two very good lakes one being Lake Waikaremoana in
Northern Hawkes Bay and the other Lake Tutira, 35 minutes drive from
Napier produce some excellent trout.
My specialty for Sight Fishing these rivers and local tributary streams
is with a combination of a dry fly and nymphs used together. Which makes
one cast hook ups possible and seeing trout move from a metre down to
take a dry fly on the surface. Breath taking stuff...
