Fly fishing at the Top of the South Island

Great Fish!The Nelson region of New Zealand is world renowned for its excellent fly fishing, and Pigeon Valley Lodge can show you just how well-deserved this reputation is. Peter Warren is widely recognised as an expert fly fishing guide, having him as your host at Pigeon Valley Lodge can only enhance your experience.

The area has some outstanding rivers and a large number of choices. Many of the rivers are bush clad, very scenic, and can hold some monster trout particularly during the mouse years when the native bush provides an abundance of food for the mice and plagues develop. These mice swim across the rivers and of course are no match for a big trout. Consequently the trout grow even larger....the stuff dreams are made of!

Some of the better known rivers in this area include;

Very ScenicThe Buller River, D'Urville River, Goulter River, Gowan River, Motueka River, Owen River, Pelorus River, Sabine River, Wairau River, Wangapeka River, Karamea River, and Mokihinui River but the choice is endless.

And there's a nice variety from superb high quality remote back country rivers that require Helicopter access or a long walk to a variety of easily accessible rivers, accessible by 4x4. Brown trout predominate though rainbows are found in some places.

Trout sizes average from 3 - 6 lbs but there's always the chance of a big one up or over 10lbs in this area

Combine the above with the high sunshine hours and the Nelson area has it all

The Nelson Region

Nelson has the highest sunshine hours of any area of New Zealand making it a popular area to visit.

One of the highlights in this area are the National Parks, firstly the Abel Tasman National Park with it's stunningly beautiful beaches with clear blue waters over golden sand and then of much more interest to the fly fisherman are the Nelson Lakes and the Kahurangi National Parks.

There are many attractions and things to do for the non fishing members of your party. Nelson offers multiple opportunities for adventure, leisure, dining, shopping and to name just a few;

Nelson is known as the walkway capital of New Zealand with over 40 walks available within 16 kilometres of Nelson city.
